Mix Roastby M Street Music

Mixing in Logic Pro

Logic Pro is Apple's flagship DAW and one of the most complete mixing environments available at any price. Its integrated channel strip with built-in EQ, compressor, and gain provides a console-style workflow out of the box. Combined with world-class stock plugins like Space Designer, Multipressor, and the Vintage EQ Collection, Logic Pro gives you everything needed for professional mixes without a single third-party plugin.

Mixing Workflow Tips

  • 1Use the Channel Strip as your starting point — every track has a built-in EQ, compressor, and gain section accessible from the Inspector. Set the input gain first to establish proper levels before hitting any plugins.
  • 2Create bus sends by clicking the Send slot on any channel strip and selecting an available bus. Logic automatically creates an Aux channel strip for the bus, where you place your shared reverb or delay at 100% wet.
  • 3Use Track Stacks (Summing Stacks) to group related instruments into submix buses. The main track becomes the bus channel with its own processing chain, and child tracks fold neatly underneath.
  • 4Enable Flex Pitch on vocal tracks to correct tuning issues directly in the arrangement window before processing — this avoids the need for third-party pitch correction in many cases.
  • 5Use the Mixer view (press X) for a console-style overview. Sort channels by type, color-code track groups, and use VCA groups for linked fader control without summing audio.
  • 6Automate volume, panning, sends, and plugin parameters using Logic's automation lanes. Press "A" to toggle automation view and choose between Read, Touch, Latch, and Write modes.

Best Stock Plugins for Mixing

Channel EQ

Built-in 8-band parametric EQ with analyzer on every channel strip. Use it for high-pass filtering, surgical cuts, and broad tonal shaping. Its low CPU footprint means you can run it on every track without performance concerns.

Compressor

Seven different compressor models in one plugin: Platinum Digital, Studio VCA, Studio FET, Classic VCA, Vintage VCA, Vintage Opto, and Vintage FET. Each model reacts differently — use Studio FET for aggressive drums and Vintage Opto for smooth vocals.

Space Designer

Convolution reverb loaded with real impulse responses from famous studios, halls, and plates. Use it on a bus send for realistic spatial placement. Load custom IRs to match any acoustic environment.

Multipressor

Multiband compressor with up to four bands and independent threshold, ratio, attack, and release per band. Essential for taming unruly bass frequencies without affecting the midrange, or controlling harsh vocal sibilance.

Linear Phase EQ

Phase-accurate EQ ideal for mastering and bus processing where phase coherence matters. Use it on the stereo bus or drum bus when surgical cuts are needed without phase-induced smearing.

Limiter

Transparent brick-wall limiter for the master bus. Set the output ceiling to -1.0 dBTP and use the gain to push into the limiter for loudness. Its lookahead design catches transients cleanly.

Export Settings

  • Bounce via File > Bounce > Project or Selection (Cmd+B). Select "PCM" for uncompressed audio and choose WAV or AIFF as the file format.
  • Set the resolution to 24-bit and sample rate to 44100 Hz for streaming-ready masters. If your project runs at 48 kHz or 96 kHz, Logic handles the conversion automatically.
  • Enable "Dithering" with POW-r dithering when bouncing to 16-bit. For 24-bit bounces, leave dithering off to preserve the full dynamic range.
  • Check "Normalize: Off" (Overload Protection Only) to avoid boosting the entire mix to 0 dBFS. Overload protection prevents clipping without changing your intended level.
  • Use "Bounce in Place" (Ctrl+Cmd+B) on individual tracks to render plugin-heavy channels to audio, freeing CPU for the rest of the mix.

Common Mistakes in Logic Pro

Ignoring the Channel Strip EQ and Compressor

Many users skip Logic's built-in channel strip processing and immediately load third-party plugins. The Channel EQ and Compressor are high-quality, low-CPU tools that handle 80% of mixing tasks. Use them first, and reach for third-party options only when you need a specific character.

Overusing Space Designer on insert slots instead of sends

Loading Space Designer as an insert effect on every track creates isolated, disconnected spaces and wastes CPU. Use it on one or two bus sends so that multiple tracks share the same reverb environment, creating a cohesive soundstage.

Not using Flex Pitch to fix tuning before mixing

Vocal tuning issues become harder to fix once EQ, compression, and reverb are applied. Enable Flex Pitch early and correct major pitch problems in the arrangement view before adding any processing — this gives your plugins clean source material to work with.

Bouncing at the wrong sample rate without dithering

Bouncing a 24-bit, 96 kHz project directly to 16-bit, 44.1 kHz without enabling dithering and proper sample rate conversion introduces quantization noise. Always enable dithering when reducing bit depth and let Logic handle the sample rate conversion cleanly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Absolutely. Logic Pro's stock plugins compete with many professional third-party bundles. Space Designer is a world-class convolution reverb, the Compressor plugin offers seven distinct circuit models, and the Channel EQ is transparent and efficient. Countless hit records have been mixed entirely in Logic Pro.

In the Mixer, select the tracks you want to group, then go to Mix > Create VCA for Selected Channel Strips. A VCA fader controls the relative volume of all assigned tracks without summing their audio — this means the individual track processing and sends remain independent, unlike a Summing Stack.

A Summing Stack routes all child tracks through a single bus (the main track) where you can apply group processing like bus compression and EQ. A Folder Stack simply organizes tracks visually — it has no audio routing. For mixing, always use Summing Stacks when you want bus processing on a group.

Flex Pitch is excellent for correcting moderate pitch issues and works non-destructively in the arrangement view. For transparent, real-time pitch correction on lead vocals or extreme pitch effects, dedicated plugins like Auto-Tune or Melodyne offer more control. Use Flex Pitch for quick fixes and background vocals, and third-party tools for critical lead vocal work.
